What commercial truck insurance covers
A commercial truck policy is built from several coverages. The ones you need depend on what you haul, where you drive and whether you run under your own authority or leased on to a motor carrier.
Primary liability — pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others in an accident. It's required by law, and for-hire interstate carriers must meet federal minimum limits.
Physical damage — repairs or replaces your truck and trailer after a collision, theft, fire, vandalism or storm damage.
Motor truck cargo — protects the freight you're hauling if it's damaged or lost.
Non-trucking liability (bobtail) — for owner-operators leased to a motor carrier: covers you when you drive your truck off dispatch.
And more: trailer interchange, general liability, occupational accident and workers' compensation.
